THE DEMOCRATIC BASE IS ANEMIC IN THEIR ENTHUSIASM AND SUPPORT (continued)

MY REACTION AFTER A VERY STINGING CRITICISM COMING FROM WHITE HOUSE PRESS SECRETARY GIBBS

My question is simply this: was Mr. Gibbs expressing his opinion or was he only reflecting the underlying criteria that the base of the Democratic Party who elected Obama should not bitch and should be applauding euphorically for the gains this administration had made albeit limited and meager as they seem to be to us progressives. Mr. Gibbs called us “professional leftists” and that implies that he has contempt for us and sees us as detrimental to the administration…Does President Obama think the same way? Did we actually go and voted for someone we thought was progressive and liberal and we got a middle of the road, professorial pragmatist, non-confrontational coward?

In my opinion President Obama needs to be more like Truman and FDR and less like Jimmy Carter who was a decent, intelligent man but too accommodating and too naïve to believe that the Republicans were so evil.

Yes, the President needs to step up to the plate and be confrontational and not on the defensive as he has been for the past 18 months. He has a very formidable opponent in the Republicans who are hell bent on discrediting him and dehumanizing him. They will stop at nothing to do this and will lie and spread all kinds of rumors and use fear tactics. They have a whole cable television channel working exclusively for this endeavor: FOX NEWS.

Curiously, the Stimulus Package is not working as expected because most of those who have access to that money are Republicans and very greedy bankers who would actually hoard the money and not use it as it was initially intended. It is a form of sabotage and it is costing our nation millions of jobs. It is a lot more convenient to employ those funds for speculation and for casino style gambling as it produces more profits than loaning it out to small businesses; which brings me to the conclusion once again that “TRICKLE DOWN ECONOMICS” doesn’t work.

How horrible is it that the Republicans are begrudging a few billion dollars to go into circulation helping the unemployed or in another effort to keep our teachers, police and firefighters away from the unemployment lines while all they want to do is keep that money from actually circulating so that come November they can claim that unemployment is still high and Obama and his administration have failed miserably. This contrasts tremendously with their insistence in keeping the Bush tax cuts for the very rich which produced an unimaginable deficit…and for those tax cuts, the Republicans are not even blinking nor are they worried that it will increase our national debt…it is ok, it will help out their poor, abused, unfortunate cronies who have been so negatively impacted by the economic crisis that some of them have had to put up their Hamptons mansion up for sale.

We were very disappointed when President Obama came out in favor of more off-shore exploration and drilling for oil. I thought that it was a move designed to take away the Republican talking point of “drill, baby drill” and then the BP oil catastrophe happened. We found out a few things that we were not aware of; one was that the regulations that were supposed to prevent this from happening just were not there and the ones that existed were written by the oil companies. The other was that corporations like BP are only interested in

profits, screw the environment and fuck the American public they are simply not interested in any of this and their deceit and public relations efforts have been geared to confuse and keep the American public from learning the truth. We were very worried that like Exxon before them, with the Valdez oil spill; the claims would drag on for years in court litigation and when President Obama was able to make BP shed 20 billion dollars to start the clean up and retribution the Republicans called it a “SHAKE DOWN” and even apologized publicly to the oil companies for that. I just wonder what would have happened if President Obama had not obtained that meager concession from BP.

We will continue to support our President, not enthusiastically but with the fear that if we don’t the Republicans will take back power and I am not particularly thrilled about having a Sharon Angle or a Rand Paul in the Senate and the prospect of a Sarah Palin presidency just scares the shit out of me.

To be continued…
