WHEN ECONOMIST PAUL KRUGMAN TALKS, I LISTEN

It is not because he won a Nobel Prize in economics it is because the guy makes sense.

There are a lot of professorial, self-anointed gurus in economics out there that will fill the spectrum on the left and right to validate any point of view. There seems to be an abundance of those who are the protégées of those right wing think tanks and as I call them: “ECONOMICS 101 FOR RENT OR SALE”

I don’t have a degree in economics nor do I presume to have any expertise…but if you are observant, if you don’t close your mind and listen to Teahadist-Republicans then you might observe the same details, facts and trends as I do.

Krugman seems to see the big picture without losing track of the small stuff. But he is not the only one who sees some trends and makes the same observations I have.

If you listen to Beck, Limbaugh or Fox then you are beyond help…you haven’t realized that their job is to scare you into submission and at the same time selling you overpriced gold.

Here is what Paul Krugman said back in October 7th:

“Paul Krugman: In Trade, ‘It’s Not the Great Depression — It’s Worse”

By Kelly Evans

Princeton University economist, author and New York Times columnist Paul Krugman won the Nobel Prize in economics last year for his work on international trade — so the guy knows what he’s talking about when it comes to this subject. And he’s worried.

First, he offered a few comments about the U.S. economy at the World Business Forum conference in New York:

1 - Based on GDP, “the recession is over, we’re back to a world of growth”

2 - But, “the jobs picture is continuing to deteriorate. The recession may be over, but the bad times are nowhere near over.”

3 - “This could be bad. Financial crises tend to produce prolonged hits to growth…and this is the mother of all synchronized financial crises so we almost certainly have a long, long slog before we’re fully recovered.”

Then, he turned to the topic of world trade. And the picture he painted was not a pretty one.

“When it comes to international trade, actually it’s not the Great Depression, it’s worse,” he said, presenting charts showing the decline in global trade activity falling much more steeply in the current downturn than during the Depression.

“The scale of the collapse of world trade has been so large that it has produced a degree of international linkage that surpasses what even the pessimists imagined,” he said. “World trade acted as a transmission mechanism,” spreading economic distress “even to those countries that had relatively healthy financial systems,” such as Germany.

“We really are one world economy in a way that has never been true before,” he said.

Despite the collapse in trade, Krugman downplayed concerns about protectionism.

The Obama administration’s move last month to impose tariffs on certain imports of Chinese tires raised much concern that nations are leaning towards protectionism — a move some economists say worsened and prolonged the Great Depression.

But Krugman isn’t convinced. First, he said, protectionism was an effect –– not a cause — of the Great Depression — a frequent misconception among economists, he said. And despite “incidents” it hasn’t really been a factor in the current downturn.

He added that as for the tire tariffs, they “aren’t really a big deal,” because they are “part of the rules” under world trade agreements and are temporary — rather than permanent — in nature.

BAILOUTS – REPUBLICANS WERE ONCE FOR IT…NOW THEY ARE AGAINST IT

DID YOU GET ANY OF THAT MONEY? I SURE DIDN’T

Are the Republicans counting on the American people coming down with a case of mass amnesia? We are now hearing them using the “BAILOUTS” as one of the talking points in their political campaign. First they were for it…now they are opposed to it.

All you need to know is that it was Bush’s BAILOUT for the banks, Wall Street, some corporations and his super rich cronies. The Republicans pushed as the cure all and without it America should have sunk into financial ruin.

We also know that it was those very rich; the bankers and the Wall Street types who got a hold of that money…borrowed from the Chinese and others so they could get generous bonuses and rewards for having driven their companies into bankruptcy and the economy into a tailspin.

I didn’t get any of that money…did you? Now the Republicans are trying to make it sound like this was one of President Obama’s initiatives, one that has failed miserably and all blame should go to him.

Many Americans are worried that, somehow, in the unfathomable complexity of it all, they might end up losing their savings, their jobs or even their homes as a result of the still-unfolding mega-crisis in the banking and financial-services sector, a meltdown that started on Wall Street and continues to exert a worldwide impact. How far will the damage it has engendered spread? But there will not be any bail-outs for us the middle class or for the poor as some of us who have already lost our jobs, our homes and our savings have found out. But please, Republicans, don’t insult us by telling us that it is something President Obama has done.
