Lara Logan Breaks Silence On Cairo Assault -- CBS News

Lara Logan feared she would die a "torturous death" during a sexual assault and beating she suffered at the hands of a violent mob in Egypt's Tahrir Square. In her first television interview since her ordeal two months ago, the CBS News chief foreign correspondent and "60 Minutes" reporter reveals what happened to her for the first time in an interview conducted by Scott Pelley.

Logan's story will be broadcast on "60 Minutes" this Sunday, May 1 at 7 p.m. ET/PT.

CBS Reporter Recounts a ‘Merciless’ Assault -- New York Times

Lara Logan thought she was going to die in Tahrir Square when she was sexually assaulted by a mob on the night that Hosni Mubarak’s government fell in Cairo.

Ms. Logan, a CBS News correspondent, was in the square preparing a report for “60 Minutes” on Feb. 11 when the celebratory mood suddenly turned threatening. She was ripped away from her producer and bodyguard by a group of men who tore at her clothes and groped and beat her body. “For an extended period of time, they raped me with their hands,” Ms. Logan said in an interview with The New York Times. She estimated that the attack involved 200 to 300 men.

My Comment: Organizations like the Committee to Protect Journalists as well as news organizations will need to update their procedures and protocols on how their reporters must cover wars and conflicts .... and if Lara Logan's experience can expedite this more quickly .... kudos to her for then talking about it.

WikiLeaks: Leaked Files Accuse BBC Of Being Part Of A 'Possible Propaganda Media Network' -- The Telegraph

The BBC is accused of being part of a “possible propaganda media network” for Al Qaeda, according to the leaked US files on the Guantanamo detainees.

The files, obtained by the WikiLeaks website and passed to The Daily Telegraph, disclose that a phone number of someone at the BBC was found in the phone books and phones of a number of extremists seized by US forces.

A detainee assessment, dated 21 April 2007, states: "The London, United Kingdom (UK), phone number 0044 207 XXX XXXX was discovered in numerous seized phone books and phones associated with extremist-linked individuals.

“The number is associated with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).” Analysis by The Daily Telegraph suggests the number is one for Bush House, home of the BBC World Service.

My Comment: If this was World War Two, today's BBC mindset would have the network bend over backwards to get an interview with Hitler to get his side of the story .... and this is the problem with the BBC today. Their search for moral equivalence that would justify interviewing someone like Osama Bin Laden paints a totally wrong picture of who Osama Bin laden is .... and more importantly .... what he represents. But in the eyes of the BBC .... Osama Bin Laden and Al Qaeda are an organization that deserves a voice .... regardless of how evil that voice is.

2 wars, 2 scandals, 2 presidents add up to uneven coverage.

Reports of a U.S. “death squad” in Afghanistan, complete with the publication of gory photographs, have failed to attract the intense political or media attention afforded a previous war scandal — the mistreatment of Iraqi prisoners at Abu Ghraib.

In 2004, CBS News broadcast an array of photographs showing American jail guards abusing Iraqi detainees. The most famous: a forced pyramid of naked, humiliated prisoners. The depictions touched off an avalanche of media coverage. In Congress, liberals called for the resignation of Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld. Democrats launched inquiries and held a string of well-covered hearings.

My Comment: Former Sec. of Defense Rumsfeld has noticed this double standard,as well as the foreign press. But back in the U.S., this story is now on the back pages (if at all). A 'double standard' .... you betcha.
