I came from a big family and we lived in poorest part of town. When I was a boy there was no grass to play on, so I played with my friends on the old cobbled streets. We played from morning to evening every day of the week. I worked on my football skills. The ball bouncing unevenly off of the cobbles made my anticipation and technique sharper.
Across the road from where we used to play there was a café where the old men used to sit and watch us play. When we walked home they used to say to me “You are good, one day you will play for Arsenal!”
Truthfully they didn’t know what Arsenal was, but it was an expression they learned from their fathers that when a boy was a good footballer they said “You are so good, you will play for Arsenal!” I never forgot those words.
As I got older I got better and better and I was spotted by a scout from my home town team. Although I was young I moved into the first team very quickly.
Then one day I was called in to the manager’s office. When I walked through the door I was shocked to see Arsene Wenger standing there with the manager and chairman. I was in a daze as I heard the chairman say “We are selling you to Arsenal!”
It was at that moment I knew that I would achieve my dream….
To play for Barcelona!
