This house would look great anywhere in the world

On the road again. Visiting for the first time the Sri Lanka Red Cross branches in Trincomalee, Batticola and Ampara, places that were totally devastated by Tsunami and bruised by long-running conflict, But the joy in my heart tonight to see we have got the construction right, and communities are at peace.

Fifthmilepost Red Cross village, on the outskirts of Trincomalee.. Tile roofed houses on the right side of the road, a football field on the left, a beauty salon upper centre, electricity supply from the city, and a water supply that drains from forest covered hills. The Red Cross did build back better for these Tsunami victims who lost their sea side houses. Photo: Bob McKerrow

Onthatchimadam village. The playground, the two storied houses (US$10,000 each) and a new community centre going up, could be anywhere in the world. Photo: Bob McKerrow

Talking to house owners at Onthachimadam 2 village near Batticaloa. Woody left Bob next discussing housing.

I was hugely impressed by the three-storied Out Patients Department at Polonnaruwa. Inside, I met the head doctor and he showed me this quality facility treating 800 outpatients a day. Four doctors work here in this spotless facility and patients get free Government supplied medicine. The Sri Lanka Red Cross supported by the IFRC,  built this. Photo: Bob McKerrow

Driving past the ricew field on the way to Ampara where we are spending tonight.

The Sri Lanka Red Cross has done a remarkable job building so many houses, large hospitals and clincs, as well as huge water supplies, sanitation systems and livelihoods.
